PRE-ADMISSION WORKSHOP
July 23-29, 2008
Worley, Idaho

The Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP) and the University
of Minnesota – Duluth, Center of American Indian and Minority Health will conduct a Pre-Admission Workshop in coordination with the AAIP 37th Annual Meeting & National Health Conference on July 23-29, 2008 in Worley, Idaho.

Scholarship Application

The purpose of the workshop is to provide a framework for undergraduate and graduate students in the application process to a health professional school. The workshop consists of presentations conducted by American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Physicians, Association of Native American Medical Students (ANAMS), University faculty, and other Health Care Professionals. It addresses common issues encountered by students in the application process. The workshop will assist students on how to select a health professional school, develop a personal statement, MCAT preparation, the admissions process, how to contact supportive services, financial aid/scholarship resources, and how to prepare for the interview with the professional school admissions committee. In addition, an AI/AN Physician and medical student will conduct a “mock interview” for each participating student.

A completed application needs to include the following and received in the AAIP office by

Friday – June 27, 2008

• AAIP Student Primary Data Sheet Scholarship Application
• Recent College and/or University Transcripts
• One Letter of Recommendation from a professor or academic advisor
• Copy of your Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood or Tribal Identification Card
• Recent photograph for identification and publication purposes
• One page personal statement: Why you are seeking a professional career in the health professions? What influenced you and the experience(s) you have had to support this decision? Your career goals and where you plan to work. The physician and medical student will use this in your mock interview.

Please submit the scholarship application and required items by the deadline of Friday, June 27, 2008. A total of twenty student scholarship awards are available. If you are selected, the AAIP scholarship will pay for your airfare or mileage reimbursement if you drive, provide lodging at the hotel, and most meals.

IMPORTANT NOTE – Scholarships to attend a Pre-Admission Workshop (PAW) are awarded to a student on a one-time basis. Those students that have previously received an AAIP – PAW scholarship to attend a previous PAW need not apply. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
