Poster Competition Announcement

July 24-29, 2008 - Coeur D’Alene Casino & Resort - Worley, Idaho

The 37th Annual AAIP Meeting, “Listen! The Eagles are Calling: Our Native Youth Cry Out for Healing”, will identify concepts to achieve prevention and strategies to increase overall wellness in youth. While this meeting will focus on challenges and successes in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth prevention, it will touch on all aspects of AI/AN health. Posters on all topics are welcome, as long as they concern research by, for, or about American Indians, First Nations, or Inuit peoples. The research work presented should be health-related, and should focus on either basic science or clinical research.

The poster competition will be open to all meeting attendees. POSTER COMPETITION PRESENTERS WILL RECEIVE $50 OFF THE REGISTRATION FEE (first author only eligible for fee waiver). There will be three eligible categories: 1) Undergraduate, 2) Graduate/Medical Student and 3) Professional (includes residents, health care providers, and physicians). Awards will be given to the top research posters in each category after a review by a panel of judges. The awards for each eligible category are:

1st Prize = $300
2nd Prize = $150
3rd Prize = $75

WHO: Undergraduate students, graduate students, resident physicians, health care providers, physicians, and other meeting attendees with relevant AI/AN health research.

WHEN: Posters will be displayed from 8am-8pm on Friday, July 25th

WHERE: Golf Pavilion

APPLICATIONS are due Monday, June 9th, 2008 by 5pm CST and must include the following items:

  • Cover Letter with name, contact information, student or professional status and brief biographical sketch
  • Research Abstracts are limited to 250 words, single spaced, in WORD, and must adhere to the following format:

Title: One line description
Author(s): Underline the person presenting the poster [First name, Middle initial, Last name]

Background: State the health issue or problem and its impact

Objectives/Aims: State the objectives or aims of the research

Methods: Describe the type of study, the setting for the study, the sample characteristics, the measures used, how the analysis was conducted, etc.

Results: Key findings from the study (no charts or graphs)

Conclusions: The importance or relevance of results

Presenter Contact Information: List your name, address, e-mail, phone, and fax

Applications are DUE JUNE 9th, 2008. If your poster is approved to compete in the AAIP poster contest, you will be notified by June 16th, 2008. The AAIP poster competition poster dimensions and guidelines will be included in that notice.

*Attention current University of Arizona students: The ITCA/UA AIRCH Program has limited travel funding available to support UA American Indian students who apply and are accepted for the AAIP Research Poster Competition. In order to be considered for travel funding, please submit your application/abstract to AAIP by May 1, 2008. Yes, that means you have an earlier deadline!
