2008 - 2009 ANAMS Executive Board
Naomi Young, President
Ya’at’eeh. Naomi yinishye. Taachiinii nishli (I am born into the Red Running into the Water Clan). Tabaaha bashischiin (I am born for the Water Edge People). I am from Sawmill, Arizona, a graduate of Window Rock High School and have degrees in Molecular and Cellular Biology and American Indian Studies from the University of Arizona. I am interested in Pediatrics and Family Medicine as well as biomedical research and health policy. My stress relievers to school are running, swimming, basketball, coaching peewee basketball and talking to kids about staying in school. I have participated in numerous summer programs and internships since high school and, as a result have two goals in my profession: to help eliminate health disparities through medical and political measures; and to give back to mentoring programs that have helped me get where I am today. Ahe’hee. Thankyou for allowing me to be a part of ANAMS.
Donovan Williams, President Elect
Hi, I am Navajo from Arizona. I grew up working with my father the carpenter, watching over livestock for my grandparents, and running through forests and long roads in Flagstaff, Arizona. I have since come to Tucson and graduated with a bachelors in physiology. I am currently doing a fellowship year in pathology my post-sophomore year in medical school at the University of Arizona. There are other things I have done like worked as a projectionist and manager at several movie theaters, served coffee at a coffee shop, and worked as a scribe in the emergency department at St. Mary’s hospital. It’s interesting now because I love movies, I prefer coffee in the mornings and I seem to constantly stay busy as a medical student.
Being on the board for ANAMS does mean a lot to me when I know there are so few Native health professionals in the U.S. and neighboring countries. It is nice to meet many Native health students at conferences and from different schools. I see the commonalities we have and I am encouraged that there are others going into health professions. There are many challenges to becoming a health professional and I only hope that ANAMS can be a positive resource for students from all over.
Amanda Bighorse, Treasurer
Hi, I’m Amanda from Rose, OK. I am Cherokee, Osage, and Seneca-Cayuga and also a second year at OSU-COM. It is a pleasure and honor to not only be a member of this awesome organization, but also to serve on the ANAMS executive board. I’m looking forward to another great year of getting to know other Native medical students from across the United States. I am also really excited about the Big Bro/Big Sis project that the ANAMS board has been working on. We hope that you all will become involved and help encourage Native youth to pursue careers in the health field. If you have any questions, we’re all here for you and hope to see you at upcoming conferences!
Stephanie Augustine, Membership Coordinator

Jean Howell, Secretary
Hello my name is Jean Howell and I am Western band Cherokee. I am currently a 4th year medical student at the University of Minnesota. I am pursuing a combined residency in Family Medicine and Psychiatry and plan on specializing in post traumatic stress disorder. I joined ANAMS in 2006 and this will be my first year on the executive board and look forward to serving and helping continue and improve on the good work that ANAMS does.
Missy Begay, Member at Large
Yaa’a’t’eeh! My name is Missy Begay and I am Dine from Blackrock, Arizona. I’m currently a second-year medical student at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. I am honored to be a part of the ANAMS executive board this year and look forward to meeting other medical students at AAIP/ANAMS events. I’ve immensely enjoyed participating in the cross-cultural workshops and annual conferences in the past. I gain knowledge about other Native cultures, lifestyles in medicine, traditional healing, mentoring, and enjoy the networking opportunities with physicians working in our Native communities. I believe ANAMS is truly a partner in supporting Native medical students and also in addressing the health inequities that exist in our hometowns. In my off-study mode I look forward to watching Woody Allen movies, learning new recipes, listening to live music, and running the beautiful trails of New Mexico!

Michael Clarke, Member at Large
Haku! I am Chumash and a fourth year medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, MN. It is certainly my pleasure to be a member of the ANAMS executive board this year. During the past 3 years I have enjoyed interacting with fellow students and physicians at the AAIP conferences and I am eagerly looking forward to the next year. Please feel free to contact any of us with questions regarding ANAMS or medical education in general.
