DIABETES TODAY TRAINING
Addressing Diabetes: Finding and Maintaining
Balance for Yourself, Family and Community

Purpose of Training

  • To give healthcare professionals, organizations and interested community members the knowledge and tools to provide culturally appropriate diabetes education, care and outreach to American Indian/Alaskan Native populations.
  • To train and give participants the resources to present Diabetes Today information in their own communities, so that together they can realize their ability to make change and unite to tackle diabetes.

Goals of Training

  • Participants will be able to enhance diabetes services through the creation of community coalitions
  • Participants will be able to utilize AIAN diabetes care and prevention strategies
  • Participants will be able to plan and evaluate a community diabetes program
  • Participants will have the tools to empower their community

Training Style and Resources

  • The training is presented in a “train the trainer” style, so that participants can utilize the information in their own communities.
  • A Diabetes Today Training manual is giving to each participant that includes a hardcopy of the power point presentation, educational activities for each training module, module handouts and guidelines for implementing each module.
  • A CD with the Diabetes Today power point presentation, which can be modified to reflect your specific Native population.

Training Curriculum

  • Module 1: Defining Diabetes and Mobilizing a Community Response
  • Module 2: Diabetes In Your Community
  • Module 3: Planning and Implementing Your Diabetes Program/Coalition
  • Module 4: Evaluating Your Diabetes Program/Coalition

Registration

  • Registration is limited to 30 participants
  • There is no registration fee for the training
  • Participants are responsible for making their own travel and lodging arrangements
  • $100 travel stipends are available for participants after the completion of the training.
