Diabetes - Program Information
Overview
The AAIP Diabetes Program is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and works in conjunction with the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) as a member of the NDEP National American Indian Alaska Native (AIAN) Workgroup. The AAIP Diabetes Program is an education-based program that promotes diabetes awareness through prevention and control. The promotion of diabetes awareness is accomplished through:
• Dissemination of NDEP materials
• Nationwide partnerships
• Funding opportunities, and
• National and local trainings.
Dissemination
The AAIP Diabetes Program staff is committed to the dissemination of culturally specific NDEP materials throughout Indian Country. The materials target education in a culturally relevant way in regard to the types of diabetes, complications of diabetes, and helpful tips to encourage the prevention of this disease. Because diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death in AIAN populations, the materials prove to be a useful tool for education efforts and promote a positive attitude that diabetes can be prevented and controlled. A complete list of culturally relevant campaigns and materials is available on the ‘Program Resources’ page.
Dissemination is also completed through the construction and maintenance of our Diabetes Education Resource Database. Information and selected resources are available through this page for individuals and organizations to obtain helpful information on a variety of diabetes-related topics.
Partnerships
The AAIP Diabetes Program has built strong and lasting partnerships throughout Indian Country with individuals, organizations, tribes and community leaders that are committed to the elimination of health disparities in Native populations. Only through collaborative efforts will educational and resource opportunities multiply to benefit the AIAN people. Our Diabetes Network Affiliates include: Partnership Network Affiliates, Regional Member Affiliates, and Coalition Affiliates
Funding Opportunities
Once a year, the AAIP Diabetes Program accepts applications for the $1000.00 mini-grant that is awarded in the month of November, which is the National Diabetes Awareness Month. The grant is intended to provide funds for organizations that work with the AIAN population to host a diabetes awareness activity or event during November to promote diabetes education and the implementation of healthier lifestyles. Our program accepts applications starting in the month of September of each year
Our Coalition Affiliates and Regional Member Affiliates are eligible for funding and have access to additional resources. To learn more about joining our Network please e-mail Anita
Training
“Diabetes Today Training” is facilitated by the AAIP Diabetes Program Staff in a different geographical region each year. The purpose of the training is to train healthcare professionals, organizations and interested community members to educate and engage AIANs to prevent and control diabetes using culturally sensitive and relevant approaches. The “Diabetes Today Training” teaches a community-based approach to tackling diabetes. Upon completion of the training, participants take their new skills and knowledge back to empower the rest of their community to address diabetes. All materials and resources for the training are provided and registration is free.
The NDEP Community Partnership Guide Training is provided once a year to raise awareness of the importance of networking and building partnerships in AIAN communities. Partnerships enable the community to effectively promote diabetes awareness activities, trainings and events. This training is typically provided at a national conference.
