AAIP Member-at-Large Lori Arviso Alvord, MD (Navajo) Born in 1958 and raised on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Crownpoint, N.M., Alvord earned her undergraduate degree at Dartmouth University. A graduate of Stanford Medical School, Lori Arviso Alvord was the nation’s first Navajo surgeon. She previously worked at the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine as associate dean of student and multicultural affairs and assistant professor of surgery and psychiatry. She later co-authored her 1999 memoir, “The Scalpel and the Silver Bear,” and was a nominee to become the U.S. surgeon general in 2013.
