The opiate epidemic has significantly impacted American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/ANs) communities, with disproportionately higher mortality rates and rates of opiate use disorder compared to the general US population.  Medical and psychiatric management can be a challenge, especially since these disorders often become chronic, relapsing disorders, making it difficult to diagnose which disorder is primary and secondary.  A harm-reduction, approach, including use of both medical management and psycho-social treatment, is shown to be effective in treatment of opiate use disorder.  Culture based and community based treatment approaches offer effective pathways in providing treatment in Native communities.  These issues will be discussed by presenters in panel discussion.

The goals for this workshop are to provide an overview and introduce the following topics:

  1. Identify risk factors for opiate use disorder and co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.

  2. Examine Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) approaches for severe opiate use disorder in Indian Country.

  3. Incorporate effective, culturally informed, psycho-social treatment strategies for opiate use disorder.

  4. Apply effective methods for medical management of opiate withdrawal and management of pain.

  5. Manage the opiate patient in a medical/clinical setting.
