SIHB Residents Attend AAIP Conference
November 10, 2015
By Dr. Terry Maresca
Several SIHB residents were involved in the recent Association of American Indian Physicians meeting held at the Tulalip Casino Resort on July 29-August 2.
Dr. Socia Love Thurman, a 3rd year resident, was named head lady dancer for their pow wow. Her husband Shawn, a registered nurse with Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, was head man dancer. They assisted Dr. Arne Vainio, one of
SIHB’s first resident graduates in 1997, who asked for an honor dance for his long time mentor, Dr. Talbot. Dr. Talbot
was presented with a Pendleton blanket.
SIHB hosted an educational booth at this gathering to encourage young AI/AN medical students to consider their residency training with the Seattle Indian Health Board. Many current and former residents stopped by to say hello!
Thank you to Dr. Hailey Wilson who helped staff the booth during the conference, and to Marianne Dardis, Residency Site Coordinator; Dr. Brett Bell; and Dr. Alto who welcomed over a dozen Native health professional students on an SIHB tour during the conference.
