Four Corners Alliance Pre-Admission Workshop

Successful Pre-Admission Workshop sponsored by AAIP and Four Corners Alliance held March 21-23, 2019, hosted by the University of Utah.  Twenty undergraduate students attended this workshop and came from various areas of the country.  Students were interested in various medical fields such as family medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, psychiatry, radiology, dentistry, emergency medicine, public health, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, substance abuse and mental health.  As a result of the workshop, participants’ level of knowledge about medical school application and admissions process on a scale of 1-10, with 1 representing No Knowledge and 10 representing Very Knowledge, rated between 8 and 10 for all of the students.  Students commented: 

“It was very helpful in understanding the application process”; 
“I am leaving with more confidence and understanding about my next steps in this med process”;
“I have a better understanding of the application process and the MCAT”; 
“This was a wonderful experience!  I liked all the presenters and the University of Utah was a great host”; 
“Amazing experience, overall I was able to learn and gain so much!!”

Annual Meeting Pre-Admission Workshop

AAIP and the University of Minnesota Center of American Indian and Minority Health presented the Pre-Admission workshop prior to the AAIP 48th Annual Meeting and National Health Conference, August 5-6, 2019 in Chicago, IL.  Twenty students were selected to attend the workshop and a few were able to stay and attend the annual meeting.  The two-day workshop was packed with great information for the students such as the application process, AMCAS, personal statement and preparing for interviews.  Students also received information regarding the cost of medical school and how will it be paid for.  A talking circle was held for the students to talk about being native in medical school.  The second day was filled with sessions regarding a personal statement writing workshop, mentoring session and finally mock interviews.  Students were grateful for the opportunity to attend the workshop and receive valuable information to assist them in preparing for the medical school application process.

SUNY Upstate Medical University Pre-Admission Workshop

A Pre-Admission workshop was held October 3-6, 2019, in Syracuse, New York and was attended by 20 students. Of the students attending the workshop, 72.73% were first time attendees and 27.27% had attended a previous workshop.  A majority of the students were seniors and juniors in college, several students were graduate students.  The workshop overall received a 4.9 average rating by the students with 5 being the highest rating. Workshop sessions received an average rating of 5.0 by students, favorite sessions ranged from the mock interviews, shadowing and traditional dinner and dancing.  Students commented:

“The workshop was confirmation for me that I will become a physician one day, and I felt at peace being there”
“I found the workshop to be very beneficial.  The insights from the admissions team, med students and physicians, and financial aid/payment panel were so helpful and loaded with information”
“The workshop was amazing!  Everyone was kind and helpful.  I felt this was a safe space and that I belonged there.  The PAW made me feel at peace and uplifted my spirit.  It helped me overcome some doubts I had about going to medical school, and taught me a lot about how to apply”
