2023 Lakota Summer Science Field Institute

The application link for the 2023 Lakota Summer Science Field Institute (LSSFI) is now available to apply on-line at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfr3ysD4R1CnHQe_8AsoV_6uMhy1PrwfO9dgWXD8KU5CW3q1Q/viewform. It is open until Wednesday, May 10, 2023. A complete application includes two Letter of Recommendations and proof of your Covid-19 Vaccine series.  The recommendation letters and proof Covid-19 vaccine series can be emailed to camps@giways.org or mailed to Generations Indigenous Ways, 20750 BIA 2, Interior, SD (postmarked by May10, 2023). To become a camp volunteer/mentor/support staff, email Resume or CV to camps@giways.org by Wednesday, May 10, 2023.

The goal of the Lakota Summer Science Field Institute is to motivate youth to discover and explore science, technology, engineering, and math while connecting to the Lakota culture and Unci Maka (Mother Earth). Youth will learn how physics, mathematics, and the scientific method are required and used in designing a traditional bow, harvesting traditional plants and foods, and creating traditional beadwork and quillwork, harvesting Pipestone, and learning about the land. Other learning topics that supplement the STEM curriculum are Lakota Plant Sciences, Paleontology & Geology, and a Tipi erecting presentation. The LSSFI is open to youth 6th grade and up or age 11 years and older. The first half part of the summer program will take place at Ghost Canyon in the Oglala Lakota Nation. The second part of the program will take place in the Oglala Lakota Nation, The Black Hills, and Pipestone, MN.
