Dr. Joseph Bell Scholarship Endowment

July 21, 2023
When Dr. Joseph Bell graduated from UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine in 1986, he became the first Lumbee pediatrician and the first American Indian pediatrician in North Carolina. For more than 35 years, Dr. Bell has cared for children in Pembroke and beyond.

In honor of his groundbreaking career and ongoing commitment to the health of Native children in North Carolina, Dr. Bell’s brothers – Dr. Ronny Bell and the Honorable Greg Bell – established a scholarship for medical students who identify as American Indian and are interested in pursuing a career in pediatrics. Their hope is that this scholarship can help ease the burden of debt for these students, providing them the freedom to thrive as students and pursue careers reflecting their passions in medicine.

A $100,000 endowment will produce a $5,000 scholarship each year, which will partially support tuition for a medical student. And as the endowment continues to grow with future contributions over time, so will the scholarship. 😊
